Comments: Airline Mergers: Senators Ted Stevens (R-AK), the Vice Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, John Thune (R-SD), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Byron Dorgan (D-ND) all expressed their concerns over potential airline mergers and said it is something they will be watching closely. They all voice their concern over the potential loss of quality, reduced flight availability and customer service. Dorgan said he believes there will be a wave of mergers and that he does not believe they are in the best interest of the public and they will not solve the problems airlines are facing. The Secretary noted her concern over the situation but took more of a wait-and-see approach, pointing out that the Department only serves in an advisory role, as Department of Justice is the lead agency in terms of consolidation. She did, however, vow to look into putting together a consumer task force to look into the issue.
